Today depart Australia flying to Amsterdam via Abu Dhabi with award winning Eithad Airways.
On arrival into Amsterdam you will be transferred to the port of Amsterdam to board the magnificent William Shakespeare ship. The city of Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands, is often called ‘Venice of the North’ with a history dating back over 700 years. It is home to countless canals and more than a thousand bridges. This evening enjoy an Amsterdam canal cruise to take in this beautiful city at night.
After breakfast on-board set out on this morning’s tour, taking you to Zaanse Schan for a delicious cheese making demonstration and tasting. Learn about the origins of Henri Willig cheese, from Gouda to goat and herb cheeses. You will also enjoy a clog making demonstration. After the tour you will be transferred back to the ship for lunch. This afternoon is free, with an optional tour available (additional expense - €40pp) for those who wish to explore the stunning Tulips at Keukenhof Gardens. Keukenhof is one of the world’s largest flower gardens known as the ‘Garden of Europe’. There are more than 7 million bulbs in bloom with a total of 800 varieties of tulips. You can enjoy the spectacular flower shows, inspirational gardens, unique artwork and wonderful events. After Keukenhof you will be transferred to Utrecht to re-embark the ship for the journey on to Dusseldorf.
This morning the ship will arrive in the beautiful city of Dusseldorf. Enjoy this charming city with a guided walking tour that will take you on a journey back in time, giving you an insight into how this city came about. Then it's back to the ship to enjoy a beautiful lunch onboard before the ship sets sail at 4:00pm for Koblenz.
After breakfast, step back in time as you discover the impressive medieval Marksburg Castle. It is the only hilltop castle along the Rhine which has never been destroyed. The 11th century fortress was used mainly to protect the town of Braubach. Alternatively there is an optional tour available (additional expense - €15pp) to take part in a guided walking tour of Koblenz, one of the most beautiful towns in Germany with more than 2000 years of history. Enjoy lunch on-board as the ship sets sail for Rudesheim. This evening the ship will dock in Rudesheim where you will hop on board a mini train to drop you off in the heart of the town. Bring out your toe trapping shoes as you are taken to the famous Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Cabinet Museum. This is the first museum collection of automated musical instruments in Germany and holds an impressive collection. After the museum visit you have the option to be transferred straight back to the ship or enjoy some time at leisure making your own way back to the ship before we set sail at midnight.
After breakfast, we will take the short drive to nearby Heidelberg for a guided walking tour of this wonderful city. Its setting is second to none, nestling by the picturesque river Neckar, in a valley dominated by its imposing castle, high on a wooded hillside - a true fulfilment of the perfect medieval German landscape! The city is a maze of historic, baroque and gabled buildings lining the river with its romantic old-town behind. During the 19th century it was the centre of Germany’s Romantic Movement, on the route of ‘The Grand Tour’ and visited, amongst many others, by the artist Turner who captured its splendours for eternity. During your guided walk you will see the principal sights and after some free time to explore as you wish you rejoin the ship.
"Bienvenue en France" means welcome to France. Wake up this morning to the city of the young and dynamic Strasbourg. Sitting on the border of Germany you’ll be taken on a boat tour to explore the incredible churches and museums. This afternoon after lunch take a tour through Alsace and sip like the French with an included wine tasting.
You will arrive into Basel this morning and have the morning free to explore or relax. After lunch this afternoon you will have the opportunity to explore the city of Basel with a guided walking tour. Home to forty museums and with an abundance of old town and modern architecture, beautiful green parks and bursting with arts and culture, get ready to experience this beautiful city.
A full day in port will give you the time to explore the surrounding countryside. Enjoy a ‘Tour de Suisse’, a great tour through Switzerland. Discovering mountains, lakes and small villages, this tour allows you to take in the magical Swiss countryside.
This morning you will wake up in Breisach. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast on-board the ship before a full day tour to explore the Black Forest. You will also see a cuckoo clock demonstration. Cuckoo clocks are the best example of the inventiveness and skills of Black Forest craftsmen. The Black Forest Road leads you through several small picturesque villages where you can find small shops offering thousands of different Cuckoo clocks.
Enjoy a guided walking tour through the charming town of Speyer, which is yet another one of Germany’s oldest cities. Speyer became renowned for its Romanesque Cathedral, vibrant Jewish community and seat of the Imperial Chamber Court. The impressive Romanesque Cathedraldominates the city and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition, it is also the burial place of eight emperors, including some of the most famous Holy Roman Emperors. Easily explored on foot, the centre of Speyer is home to some outstanding museums, a number of churches, the old gate and the remains of a medieval synagogue. This afternoon enjoy lunch onboard as you sail towards your next port.
Today relax on board and enjoy the ship facilities as you continue sailing along the Rhine to Mainz. This evening upon arrival in Mainz, enjoy time at leisure to explore this stunning city. One of the largest cities of Rhineland- Palatinate in Germany, it was a Roman fort city which commanded the west bank of the Rhine. The city is famous as the home of the invention of the movable type printing press, using movable type to print and manufacture books in Mainz by Gutenberg in the early 1450s.
From one German city to another you will arrive in the quaint town of Boppard. This afternoon you will experience the village from a different angle, above, with a cable car ride. Enjoy spectacular views of the vineyards, the Rhine River and the lovely town. You may wish to take the rest of the evening to explore this city at leisure before we set sail at midnight.
Arrive in Cochem this morning and take a tour to visit the beautifully renovated Reichsburg Castle. The contours of this breathtaking neo-gothic castle rise more than 100 metres above the river Mosel and allow for a stunning view of the surrounding valley. Inside the castle, a guided tour takes you through the different castle chambers, explaining the long and fascinating history including how the castle changed hands numerous times and, like most castles, also changed its form over the centuries. This evening there is an optional wine tasting available (additional expense - €16pp) forthose who wish to indulge in some local German wine.
This morning the ship will dock in Cologne, the oldest city in Germany. You’ll enjoy a guided walking tour of the city sights to uncover over 2000 years of history dating back as early as Roman times. Your guide will highlight the various cultural and historical sites of Cologne, including the Great St. Martin Church and the Historical Town Hall. This afternoon there is an optional tour available (additional expense - €34pp) for those who wish take a tour of Augustusburg Palace. The magnificent Rococo- style palace showcases extensive gardens and beautifully kept park grounds. It is protected by UNESCO World Heritage and is ranked among Germany’s top palaces to visit. Enjoy a wonderful trip back to the 18th century in Augustusburg Palace. This evening enjoy a Farewell Dinner on-board the ship.
