Kyoto

Ohayo gozaimasu! (Good morning!) After breakfast, meet with your guide and together you will travel to the start of your bike riding route for the morning. Begin your 20km cycle at Kamo River and make your way to Heian Jingu (Heian Shrine). This magnificent red and green shrine is relatively new compared to some of Kyoto’s other buildings, having been constructed in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversay of the capital’s foundation in Kyoto. We then head to Nanzenji (Nazen Temple), one of the most important Zen temples in Japan, and stroll through the serene Path of Philosophy. MEALS: Breakfast

Kyoto

This morning we begin our tour with a visit to Fushimi Inari Taisha. Famous for its thousands of bright, vermillion torii gates, Fushimi Inari is one of the most iconic shrines in Kyoto. Then we will take a walk through the Gion district, known for its beautifully preserved streets and geisha culture. We then head to Tofukuji and Kiyomizudera, both temples known for their beautiful architecture and spectacular gardens.

Kyoto

Today’s ride is a 36km cycle through Uji. Situated between Kyoto and Nara Uji’s speciality is green tea, being one of the very first places in Japan to begin green tea cultivation, and is also famous for its association with one of Japan’s most beloved stories, the Tale of Genji. We will make our way through the area, first stopping Byodoin. This is one of the country’s most striking examples of Buddhist Pure Land architecture, and is featured on the Japanese ten yen coin. We then ride on to Ujigami (Ujigami Jinja), thought to be Japan’s oldest standing shrine. Though there is no official record of its construction, experts beleive it to have been established by 1060. We finish up the day with a visit to Gekkeikan Sake Museum where you can try sake for yourself. MEALS: Breakfast

Kyoto

We begin our day with a 14km walk from Keage Incline to Mount Hiei. Once a goods railway line, the now disused Keage Incline was used to transport cargo from the Biwako Canal to Kyoto, and you can walk along the old railway tracks. On the Eastern side of Mount Hiei is Enryakuji, one of the most important temples in Japan. It was founded in 788 by the monk Saicho, who first introduced Tendai Buddhism to Japan. The temple complex is divded into three areas, which are connected by pleasant forest walking trails. MEALS: Breakfast

Kyoto

We begin our 26km journey towards Arashiyama, a beautiful mountainous area in Western Kyoto known for its many temples and its serene bamboo groves. See the Togetsu Bridge which spans the Katsura River and has become a symbol of the area. We then cycle our way over to Kinkakuji, also known as the Golden Pavilion. This stunning temple consists of three floors, each demonstrating a different architectural style, while the top two floors are covered in exquisite gold leaf. MEALS: Breakfast

Kyoto - Tokyo

Take the shinkansen bullet train from Kyoto to bright, bustling Tokyo, Japan’s largest city and the nation’s capital. Reaching speeds of up to 270km/h, a trip on the shinkansen offers you a supercut of the Japanese countryside. Take a look out your window and you should be able to see Mount Fuji. When we reach Tokyo, the rest of the day is yours to explore. Optional: Tokyo afternoon short bike ride including Tokyo Tower, Tsukuji Outer Fish Market and Odaiba Island. When will my booking be confirmed? Once your MyDiscoveries holiday voucher has been purchased you will be contacted by a member of the MyDiscoveries Reservations team. MyDiscoveries will work with the tour operator to get you booked onto your preferred travel dates and will send you an email to confirm your booking information. If for any reason we are unable to book you onto your preferred dates please refer to the MyDiscoveries 30 Day Booking Guarantee to understand our refund policy. When booking in to your travel dates, make sure you have your travel voucher number, traveller names and details of any special requirements.
What is the cancellation procedure? / Can I cancel or make changes to my booking? If for any reason you need to cancel your booking, contact the MyDiscoveries Reservations team on 1300 404 606. Once we have received your verbal request for cancellation we will ask you to confirm the request in writing (email or post is fine) so that we can accurately start processing the cancellation. Make sure you include your travel voucher number and traveller names when requesting and confirming the cancellation. Please be aware that the travel operator may impose cancellation fees. In addition, MyDiscoveries will charge a AUD $100 per person cancellation fee for cancellations outside our 30 Day Booking Guarantee period.

What type of clothes should I bring? Bring comfortable walking shoes, a sweater, clothes you can layer, an all-weather jacket, and an umbrella.
